The National Geographic docuseries Limitless with Chris Hemsworth showcases the 43-year-old Australian actor embarking on a personal mission to combat aging and discover the full potential of the human body. Created in partnership with visionary executive producers Darren Aronofsky of Protozoa Pictures, Jane Root of Nutopia, and Chris Hemsworth alongside Ben Grayson of Wild State, the show blends cutting-edge science with extreme physical trials. Across its run, the series explores longevity, mental resilience, and physical boundaries, pushing the 191 cm tall actor to his absolute limits as he consults with world-class experts to understand the human aging process.
Season 1 of the docuseries premiered on Disney+ on November 16, 2022, and consists of six episodes. Each episode focuses on a different pillar of longevity: stress, extreme temperatures, fasting, strength, memory, and acceptance. In the third episode, Hemsworth undergoes a challenging four-day fast to test the cellular benefits of starvation, but it was Episode 5, titled "Memory," that had the most profound impact on his personal life. During filming, a genetic test revealed that Hemsworth carries two copies of the APOE4 gene variant. This genetic marker increases his risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by 8 to 10 times. Rather than a medical diagnosis, this predisposition served as a wake-up call, prompting the actor to take a temporary break from his acting career to focus on preventative health measures and spend quality time with his family.
Following the success of the first season, the show returned for a three-episode second season titled Limitless: Live Better Now. It premiered on Disney+ and Hulu on August 15, 2025, and made its debut on National Geographic on August 25, 2025. In this season, Hemsworth tackles new challenges to address specific health concerns. To combat cognitive decline and build new neural pathways, the first episode features Hemsworth learning to play the drums under the guidance of Parkway Drive drummer Ben Gordon. This intense mental training culminated in a live performance alongside pop star Ed Sheeran in front of 70,000 fans in Romania, proving the power of learning complex new skills under pressure.
The remaining episodes of Season 2 push Hemsworth into new geographical and psychological territories. In Episode 2, the actor travels to South Korea to address his chronic back pain caused by scoliosis. Under the guidance of palliative care specialist Dr. BJ Miller and MMA fighter Kim Dong-hyun, he undergoes rigorous Special Forces training and adopts Buddhist practices to manage physical pain and mental stress. The final episode of the season takes Hemsworth to the Swiss Alps during winter. To study risk-taking behavior and fear, he consults with neuroscientist Abby Marsh before climbing the daunting 600-foot (200-meter) Luzzone dam, demonstrating the mental fortitude required to overcome extreme environmental stressors and conquer primal fears.
