Growing up in the Channel Islands, Cavill was the second youngest of five brothers born to Marianne, a bank secretary, and Colin Cavill, a stockbroker. An all-brother household of five boys is rarely quiet. It is a space of constant movement, shared rooms, and early lessons in holding one's own. At age 16, Cavill landed a role as a movie extra on the set of the thriller Proof of Life (2000), which was filming nearby. It was here that he met Russell Crowe. Rather than just passing by, the established actor took the time to talk to the teenager, sharing practical career advice about the realities of the acting profession. The interaction did not end on set; Crowe later sent Cavill a gift box containing memorabilia and encouraging words.
